Impact on Ecosystems

We only have one planet. We only get one shot to keep our planet safe from environmental impacts that will affect ongoing changes in the future. A tall order indeed, but all anyone can do is try their best as we travel life’s roads.

As the Not-for-Profit Canadian down and feather industry association, it was important to us to be an active part within the world industry. We joined the IDFB to be part of the conversation for positivity and sustainability as well as collaborate on consumer education and product integrity.

The International Down and Feather Bureau (IDFB) is the global trade association of the down and feather industry. IDFB is the leading resource for information about and promotion of down and feather material. IDFB conducts the research and creates the testing protocols and standards to help this industry maintain a high level of product integrity throughout the world.

They strive to create uniform and easily understandable global definitions for end-use consumers. They also conduct annual round robin assessments of independent testing institutes and other participating laboratories to guarantee worldwide maintenance and uniformity of international test and quality standards.

The IDFB commissioned a 3rd party independent white paper that compared down material to polyesters. The results showed that compared to the polyester fill material, the down fill material has 85% to 97% fewer environmental impacts in all the impact categories.

Those included ecosystem impacts from Climate Change, Terrestrial Acidification, Freshwater Eutrophication, Ecotoxicity, Agricultural Land Occupation, Urban Land Occupation and Natural Land Transformation.
